The Canadian seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth.

More than 1 million baby seals have been killed for their fur in the past four years alone – you can help us put an end to this shameful atrocity today!
The whole world reacted with horror to 2007's images of ice floes bloodied with the carcasses of hundreds of thousands of baby seals whose skins had been ripped from their backs.
The gruesome scene will soon be repeated again this year. Caring individuals like you need to speak out and demand a permanent end to the cruel seal hunt. Despite an international outcry, the Canadian government gave the go-ahead for hunters to bludgeon to death 270,000 baby harp seals last year.
We must generate an international outcry against the Canadian government for sanctioning it, ensuring that this year's hunt is the last.
Please write to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and let him know that it's time for Canada to erase this stain on its reputation and put a permanent end to the massacre.

Dear Friend,

With the seal hunt now just a few days away, it’s time to unveil the new stopthesealhunt.ca campaign site.

In the next few weeks, hundreds of thousands of baby seals will be cruelly clubbed or shot—an annual harp seal slaughter endorsed by the Canadian government. Scores of baby seals, some as young as three weeks old, will be beaten or shot and left to die. Some will even be skinned alive.

StoptheSealHunt.ca is your number one resource to stay up to date on what’s happening at this year’s hunt and to meet other seal activists from around the world.

The new interactive site features a Seal Hunt blog with daily updates from Canada, audio podcasts, and videos and photos from IFAW hunt monitors at the scene of the hunt. You’ll also receive information on how to take action as well as multiple ways to enlist others to support our fight against this inhumane practice.

Join the fastest-growing online community fighting to end the seal hunt

Add your voice along with thousands of others from around the globe to create a unique online community that celebrates your participation in putting an end to this cruel hunt.

    1) Act: Visit StoptheSealHunt.ca to take action or make a donation.
    2) Join: Upload your photo and protest message.

Baby seals are drowning.

The lack of ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence has led to a mortality rate for seal pups that could be close to 100%.  And yet the cruel hunt to kill baby seals continues.

The Canadian government has announced that 270,000 seals can be taken in this year’s hunt.  Yet according to the government’s own scientists, this number is well above the amount of seals needed to maintain a sustainable population.

Please give what you can now to stop this irresponsible slaughter.

Surveillance flights are reporting that there are virtually no harp seal pups to be found in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.  Without ice, mothers are forced to give birth to their pups in the water before they can swim.

In light of these tragic ice conditions, the responsible thing for Canada’s government to do would have been to call off this year’s seal hunt.  Tragically, the Canadian government continues to put politics ahead of science.

The Canadian government is on record stating it will take ‘real action’ on global warming.  And yet they ignore a real action they could take to combat the effects of global warming in their own backyard: ending the seal hunt.

Please give harp seals a fighting chance against global warming by making a gift today to help end the commercial seal hunt.

Of every dollar spent around the world by IFAW during the past three years, more than 83 cents went directly to animal welfare programs and institutional costs.  Your gift enables IFAW to document the cruelty of the seal hunt, fight for more seal product bans in Europe and conduct vital research to help save seals.

Please give today in memory of the thousands of baby seals we have already lost.

From Peta

Thank you for standing up for harp seals and demanding an end to this truly hellish situation.

Even though more than 110,000 caring people voiced their outrage to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Canadian government has sided with the killers. The hunt of baby seals began today.

Despite this disgusting development, we cannot give up. We must redouble our efforts to protect harp seals and end their slaughter. Together we will continue to fight for seals and all other animals who are killed for their fur until the fur trade is stopped in its tracks. That is a long-term commitment that requires constant, unfaltering work.

While the Canadian government is responsible for allowing the slaughter to resume this year, it's the furriers and their cohorts in the fashion industry who are ultimately profiting the most from the slaughter. It's only by educating both designers and consumers about the true cost of every fur and fur-trimmed item that we can hope to see an end to the killing of seals, minks, foxes, raccoons, and other animals who are murdered for their fur.

In recent months we have made huge progress working with the fashion industry. Our victories for animals include convincing Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and other leading retailers and designers to stop using fur in their fashion collections.

We have also revealed to millions of consumers exactly how terribly animals' lives are ended and how they suffer. Media coverage of PETA's demonstrations and riveting ads featuring Simon Cowell and others are spreading our message that there's no excuse for fur.

By signing our seal hunt petition, you have spoken out against the senseless slaughter of animals for their fur. To be successful in stopping the fur industry, we need your continued help:
  • Start at home: Never buy or wear fur, not even the smallest bit of trim, and encourage everyone you know to do the same.
  • Be outspoken:Learn polite and effective ways to engage people —even fur-wearers—in conversations about this cruel industry.

Tell the fashion industry to stop: Support our campaign to end fur sales by major fashion retailer Burberry.
Working together we can end this horribly cruel practice, make fashion fur-free, and save countless animals' lives. Thank you.

For all animals,

Ingrid E. Newkirk
President

Any UK visitors can sign the petition on the number 10 web site
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/SAVESEALS/

Now the EU have decided to bow to commercial pressure & delay any import ban on an EU wide basis while they study the problem again for another 10 years or so we need to put pressure on our OWN governments to introduce an immediate ban on the import of ALL seal products to the UK

There is already a partial ban on some products so it would be very easy to add the rest of the seal species to the ban

It's about time Tony Blair and his bunch stood up & did something right for a change

Belgium Becomes First EU Nation to Ban Seal Products

IFAW’s seal campaign continues to gain momentum as European countries propose legislation for banning products derived from Canada’s commercial seal hunt. In January, Belgium became the first country in the European Union to implement a national ban on seal products. Belgium joins Mexico, Croatia and the USA in the effort to shut down markets for commercial seal hunt products.

IFAW has been successful in urging other European countries, including Germany, the Netherlands and Austria, to begin legislative action to propose similar national bans.

On a larger scale, the European Union is considering the possibility of a multinational ban. This European mobilisation is putting increased pressure on the Canadian government both at home and abroad. IFAW continues to work closely with policy-makers in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, urging them to implement national bans as well.

By closing down markets for seal pelts, the global community sends a strong message to Canada that the commercial seal hunt needs to be ended once and for all

Take action to stop the seal hunt
