Up to 100 Animal and Plant Species Become Extinct Every Day

The fate of global wildlife will again be in the balance at the next meeting of the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which takes place this June in The Hague, Netherlands. As a recognised non-governmental organisation, IFAW participates in CITES meetings and engages national delegates to the convention throughout the year on behalf of animal welfare and conservation.

Through newsletters, scientific reports, public awareness campaigns and face-to-face contacts, IFAW is highlighting the critical need to limit the wildlife trade.

 This year we are focusing on five major issues:
1.   Maintaining a total ban on international ivory trading and increasing protection for highly        vulnerable elephant populations;
2.   Improving the protection of tigers through stricter enforcement and condemnation of China’s plan to legalise trade in captive-bred tiger parts;
3.   Maintaining protection for all species of whales;
4.   Increasing enforcement capacity of wildlife trade on the Internet;
5.   Opposing moves to down-list species, which allows them to be further exploited.
